A long shot starts with a wind call. Snipers read the grass and the mirage. Jumpmasters drop a streamer out the door. He uses a dandelion, the only wind indicator in the inventory that also takes requests. Twenty years of night work, and he still checks the wind the way he did at six. The data book entry reads left to right, four miles an hour, full value. It says nothing about a wish.

THE DEBRIEF

A bearded operator in near-profile, NODs down with a smiley face in each of the four lenses, headset boom mic at his mouth. A hard-knuckle glove pinches a half-blown dandelion at his pursed lips, and the seeds trail up and to the right. His beard hangs over the vest, one flag patch below it. Stippled, one ink, no lettering.

QUESTIONS FROM THE BACK

What does wind check mean?

A wind check is a reading of the wind's direction and speed right now. Pilots ask the tower for one before takeoff or landing, and shooters and jumpmasters take their own before a shot or a jump. His came off a dandelion: left to right, four miles an hour, one wish sent downrange with it.

How do snipers account for wind?

They estimate its speed and direction from mirage, flags, grass and anything else the wind moves, then hold or dial into it. A full-value wind blows straight across the shot and moves the round the most. Grass gives that reading for free; a dandelion gives the same reading and takes one wish per use.

Why do special forces have beards?

Mostly to fit in: teams working beside local partners, in places where a beard marks a grown man, get the grooming standard waived for the mission. Back home it stays because nobody has ordered it off, and he is not volunteering.
