DD-214 Alumni New School - Veterans Day Tee
A diploma issued at a separation brief, signed in three places, with a reentry code nobody explains. The quad NODs went back to the arms room; the beard came back the first week out and has not been asked to leave. The dues went in as night rotations, 0400 range days and a deployment that ran six weeks past its date. The receipt is the DD-214: box 12 has the dates, box 13 the ribbons, and box 28 a narrative reason written by someone who never met you. Original in the fire safe, copy in the truck. The alumni meeting is a driveway with a grill on Veterans Day, and the first story starts before the burgers do.
THE DEBRIEF
A crest with no circle: DD-214 ALUMNI arches across the top, DUES PAID IN FULL across the bottom. In the middle, a bearded operator in a high-cut helmet, quad NODs down over his eyes and a headset boom mic at his mouth, over two crossed suppressed carbines with weapon lights. A star at each side. Engraved line work, distressed lettering.

QUESTIONS FROM THE BACK
What do quad NODs do?
They widen the view. A single tube sees about 40 degrees of the night; four tubes, two forward and two angled out (the GPNVG-18 is the famous set), stretch it to about 97 degrees, so the wearer stops turning his whole head to clear a corner. The price is roughly a used truck.
Why do special forces have beards?
To blend in. Units working alongside local forces in places like Afghanistan were allowed beards because a clean-shaven face marked them as outsiders, and a beard carried respect. Everyone else held the grooming standard until the DD-214 came through, which is why the beard usually shows up the week after.
What does DD 214 mean to veterans?
Proof of service. It is the Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, the form behind VA benefits, the GI Bill and every Veterans Day discount, and to most veterans the most important paper they own: the original in a fire safe, a copy in the truck for the free pancakes every November.
